What makes SCCS Distinctive?
Integration of Christian worldview Each day, the grammar school studies the Scriptures using a story-based, chronological approach to teaching the Bible, with the entire sequence of the Bible being presented three times during the course of a student’s grammar years. This foundation prepares the student for more advanced study in Bible interpretation, doctrine, and apologetics at the 7th, 8th and 9th grade level.
Extensive training in reading and writing Beginning with comprehensive phonics instruction, students are given the “tools” necessary for constructing well-written sentences, paragraphs, and reports. Students develop their thinking, writing and study skills as they study and imitate the great writers of history, both secular and religious. Students are immersed in classic literature such as Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Homer’s Odyssey, Augustine's Confessions and Plutarch’s Lives. Introductory study of Latin and Logic The study of Latin provides many proven benefits including increased vocabulary skills, advanced thinking skills, and a foundation for the study of other languages. Classical language study begins in 3rd grade. In our formal Logic class in 8th grade, students learn to construct sound arguments, to identify logical fallacies and to think critically about issues of importance.
Quality instruction in core academic disciplines Focus is on quality instruction in the six core academic disciplines: History, English/Literature, Science, Mathematics, Biblical Studies, and Latin. Students sing, recite poetry, and complete projects and journals as they acquire a body of foundational knowledge essential to more advanced studies in all subject areas.
Personal attention to students SCCS is intent on assisting each student in the development of his or her talents, interests and gifts. Through small class sizes, teachers are able to know and love every student in a way that will encourage them to strive to reach their God-given potential, achieving a standard of excellence in their academic and spiritual lives. Our students are ordinary children who are encouraged and enabled to accomplish extraordinary things.
Respectful learning environment An orderly, structured atmosphere is conducive to student development and learning. Our intent is to instruct students to obey their parents and to show that same respect to all persons of authority as well as fellow students. Loving, graceful yet thorough discipline for misbehavior is meant to gently train students to make thoughtful, wise decisions in their daily life.
